What is an ETF, exactly?
An Exchange-Traded Fund (ETF) is a basket of securities — often tracking an index like the S&P 500 or MSCI World — that trades on an exchange like a single stock. ETFs are popular for long-term investing because they offer instant diversification at a low annual cost (the TER, or Total Expense Ratio), without requiring you to pick individual companies.
Why the TER matters
The TER is the yearly fee taken directly from the fund's performance, expressed as a percentage. A 0.20% TER means €2 per year on a €1,000 position.
